Trikke Pone

Trikke Pone

Why buy a Pon-e?

Why in the world would someone who likes to Trikke and get exercise buy a Trikke with a battery on it?

I managed to come up with some very good reasons.

First, I want to say that until I bought my Trikke, I never realized how many hills there were in Texas. I’m talking hills that will stop you dead in your tracks. I never noticed them before. As a matter of fact, after I bought my Trikke, I think the area experienced some sort of secret earthquake that changed the land. Suddenly in my own cul-de-sac, we had a hill.

Of course, unless everything is downhill, a Trikke beginner perceives every gentle slope as a hill. Those things stop you dead in your tracks. And then you learn to move the darned Trikke and Texas becomes flat again. Now, long, gentle inclines that I would once have dreaded on my bicycle are nothing on a Trikke.

I learned something else about Texas since buying a Trikke. The wind blows here. My neighbor told me that the local weatherman stated that we get more wind in the Dallas area than they do in Chicago. I used to play a lot of tennis. I jogged. I skated. I never noticed the wind that much.

Until I purchased a Trikke.

I have found three reasons to buy a battery-operated Trikke. 1) to combat the wind when it’s blowing steadily at 25 mph, with gusts higher than that; 2) to deal with hills when the wind is blowing against me; 3) to deal with hills that frankly, I still can’t get up. Walking is exercise, too, but carving with a little power-assist feels like an accomplishment. And it’s still exercise.

I’d considered a Tribred first and almost bought one. A set of circumstances made me re-think the purchase, and then I decided that if I were going to spend money on a battery for a Trikke, I’d go the route that I’d probably least regret in the future: the lithium battery. It’s integrated into the Trikke and doesn’t quite have the add-on look of the acid lead battery pack of the Tribred. It goes farther on a charge than a Trikke and the battery life is longer.

There were more considerations, like rolling down the street to pick up groceries and not have to start up the car for a three-quarter-mile trip. True, I could walk. The thing is, Texas can be very hot, I sweat, and the air conditioning is cranked up in the supermarket. Uncomfortable, and not a pretty sight. I will also now Trikke different routes because huge hills between good paths are no longer a stumbling block. I don’t have to drive my car to where I want to Trikke.

So that’s why in the world I have a Trikke with a battery on it. When I’m feeling virtuous, I can still carve like crazy. When I’ve given up on pride, I can scoot along and not suffer the shame of walking my Trikke up a hill. When I’m just feel the need for speed and want to be outside, I can cruise like nobody’s business.

All that said, I have no intention of abandoning my regular Trikke 08.

Can you install an Ekit on a T78air.

I recently received a request to install an ekit on a T78air. Yes we can install the e-kit on this trikke but we need to upgrade a few things to make it a good marriage. First off, the ekit itself weighs in at about 30 lbs which is a significant increase to the overall size of the T78air. The T78air Deluxe comes with the upgrades already in place. Lets review some of these changes and see how we can make our T78air a turbo trikke. In no particular order I will cover the necessary changes. A good place to start is to upgrade the cambering bushings to the latest heavy duty version. These come factory installed on the Pon-e and the Free rien. This will aid in the overall stance of our trikke with the additional weight. I would check or just replace the nylon spacers in the cambering mechanism all together. Wear may already be a factor so why not just replace these now. Get yourself some mid grade locktite and dab a bit on each bolt on the buck-knife folding system and tighten them fully. You are also going to need rubber spacers to mount the battery pack to the shaft of the steering column. Another neat add on is to install the new locking brake levers, these are a god send and help to keep the trikke standing tall when you walk away from it. It may go with out saying but we also need to ensure that the brakes are well adjusted to allow for the added power in braking distance.

T12-ekit

T12-ekit

The staff at southbaytrikke have a few words about the Ekit
Andy: Wow! That is incredible. The long awaited Trikke E-kit finally got here. One thing you notice right off is the weight that has been added to the Trikke. The e-kit has a lot of torque which creates a new sensation while riding the T12. The high & low switch allows you to change speed quickly, and acceleration is quite good. The added weight on the downhill is a nice feature, allowing to finesse the extra mass back & forth allows it to propel itself. Anyone can ride the E Trikke. On my first test run around the block I ran into a neighbor who tried the Trikke for the first time and was really excited about coming to the next demo. The ETrikke is stable and aggressive. Make sure & tune your brakes before you ride your e-kit. It’s like putting a big block in an old Chevy with drum brakes… you just don’t do it! In closing the T-12 e-kit is a fun, and enjoyable experience that should only enhance your love for Trikke.

Irene: Being a newbie Trikker, the e-kit is a definite plus! It packs a lot of power and I loved the speeds I could reach. The e-kit puts some extra weight on the front of the Trikke, and that makes me feel more secure and in-control. This e-kit is so much fun, I can’t wait to ride it again!

Sean: Holy electric e-kit Batman! This thing packs a punch!
What I liked best about the ride was how quick I could get up to carving speed. The extra weight in the front allows you to settle into a nice glide.
What I do know for sure is that when you try this, you are not gonna want to give it back and thats when I’m gonna have to say.. get your own!

Corey: the e-kit is just awesome. it’s a whole new ride and i love the feeling i get with a deep carve. it’s nice to be able to take a break while still keeping the speed up after a long ride. the e-kit is great for any level of rider and i dig it =].
